How Mediation Works
Mediation is a way of resolving problems between neighbours quickly and informally. Our mediation service is free of charge to residents living in the Winchester district, and works like this:
1. You contact us to talk over the problem. We will ask if our mediators may visit you in your home to listen to your concerns in more detail. With your agreement, we will then ask your neighbour to agree to a similar visit, so we can hear their viewpoint too.
2. The mediators will encourage you and your neighbour to meet together in a neutral venue such as a private room in a local community centre. Here, in an informal setting, everyone discusses the problem in a calm and focused way.
3. The mediators guide the meeting, but remain impartial throughout. They don’t make judgements on who might be in the right or wrong, but instead use their skills to create an atmosphere in which you can both speak freely about your concerns, hear each other’s viewpoint, and work towards arriving at a mutually-agreed way forward.
The mediation process is entirely private and confidential. This means that when you and your neighbour have resolved the problem together, only the two of you and the mediators need know what has been discussed, or even that you’ve met at all.
If you feel mediation could be the answer to your dispute, why not give us a call to talk it over?
